You can watch the videos from past months by clicking here! You can check out our selections for the best Android apps from 2017 in the video above!
Blog Compass is a new app from Google. It's currently in beta and only available in India. The app helps aspiring bloggers. It shows stats about their website, important metrics about their readership, and it even gives ideas for stuff to write about. It uses Material Design and we like that. Additionally, it's compatible with Blogger and WordPress blogs along with some self-hosted setups. It's not difficult to use and we like how organized everything seems to be with this app. It's completely free right now. However, remember that it is only available in India.
Bouncer is a new security app and a good one. It lets you micromanage your app permissions. You can grant temporary permissions to apps and revoke them later. For instance, if you want to tag a place on Facebook, Bouncer lets you give Facebook permission and then revokes it when you hit the home button. This is excellent for those with security and privacy concerns when it comes to app permissions. It also worked every time we tried it. However, there are some that had the occasional problem. The app is in beta so let the developer know if you find any bugs. The app goes for $0.99 with no additional in-app purchases or ads.
DC Universe is an all-in-one app for fans of DC Comics. It has a metric ton of content. That includes various old movies and TV shows along with a ton of comic books. The app also comes with offline support, a community forum for discussion, and a merchandise shop. It should also have some fun stuff in 2019, including some original content. The service goes for $7.99 per month after your free trial. You get unmitigated access to all of the service's content. It's a little expensive for our tastes, but it should make the hardcore DC fanbase happy and that's what counts, right?
Envision AI is a new accessibility app for the visually impaired. It acts as a set of eyes for the blind, basically. You point the phone at stuff. The app tells you what it's looking at. The developers boast functionality in places like supermarkets, restaurants, and around the home. It can even recognize friends after a proper setup. It's a new app and has the occasional bug. However, our testing and Google Play reviews agree that it works pretty well for a new app. It's completely free with no in-app purchases or advertising.
Firefox Rocket is a new browser from, well, Firefox, obviously. It's a lightweight browser with a focus on the basics. That includes a privacy browsing mode, the ability to save whole web pages for offline viewing, a bunch of features for saving data, and a native ad blocker. This is obviously for smaller markets with rough and slow Internet connections. In fact, it's currently only available in Indonesia. We expect a wider release eventually. However, those with really good and stable Internet connections may enjoy Firefox Focus a little bit more. Firefox Rocket is, of course, completely free.
GoDaddy is the official app for the GoDaddy domain name service. It does what you would expect. You can buy domain names, keep track of your previous purchases, renew domains, and monitor your website performance. Additionally, the app includes a website builder tool for those just starting out. It's an official app for a product that people already know about. It does about the same stuff that you can find on the website but in mobile app format. It's a free app and we like how it looks too. Obviously, produces and services on GoDaddy cost money, it's just the app that's free.
Rootless Launcher is a new stock Android-style launcher. It had a bit of controversy at first. Google removed the app from the Play Store. The developers fixed the app and put it back. Thankfully, it's here to stay. Some of the features include a minimal UI, icon pack support, some light customization features, and a theme engine that works with your wallpaper. It competes on the same level as launchers like Evie Launcher, Lawnchair Launcher, and similar apps. It's an excellent option for those who like a light, stock look to their home screens. It also comes with Google's Feed, but it requires a separate plugin download.
Shorty is a neat little customization app. It doesn't do a whole lot. The app lets you pin basically anything to your home screen. That includes individual URLs, files, photos, or even text files. You share whatever it is with the app using Android's normal sharing methods. From there, the app creates the shortcut. You move it wherever from there. It's a little buggy and extremely niche. However, it worked well during our testing and we kind of like the option to do something like this. The app is currently free with no in-app purchases or ads.
SW True-Fi is a rare new equalizer app. It also has music player functionality. The app lets you change the tone of your headphones fairly dramatically. You can do basic stuff like add bass. However, you can also adjust the sound for your age. It sounds different if it's set to a 20 year old male than it does if it's set to a 40 year old female. That's kind of a neat thing. Some other features include Spotify integration and the ability to mimic other types of headphones. It's still very much a work in progress and you need to sign up for the beta in order to use it. The app is free, though.
Tor Browser is one of the most best browsers for security. It now has an official version for Android. The browser does basic privacy things like block trackers, encrypts your traffic, and more. The app automatically connects to Tor's proxy network and that makes it simple to use. The app is in alpha stage, though. That means it's quite buggy and it doesn't quite work right yet. You need Orbot in order to establish a proxy connection. However, the developers want to eliminate this step in the stable release. You can play with it now if you want to and don't mind essentially being a beta tester.
