Nubia tipped to release new Red Magic with shoulder triggers, Snapdragon 845

The back of the Nubia Red Magic. Red Magic

  • Nubia is reportedly working on an upgraded Red Magic gaming smartphone.
  • The new phone is said to pack shoulder triggers and a Snapdragon 845 chipset.
  • The current Red Magic has last year’s Snapdragon 835 processor and no physical inputs.

The Nubia Red Magic was just one of a few gaming smartphones released in 2018, but it wasn’t the most spectacular device in the category. Fortunately, it seems like the company is working on a follow-up model that fixes a few issues.

According to WinFuture journalist Roland Quandt, the new phone will have a Snapdragon 845 processor and shoulder buttons.

Nubia released the original Red Magic earlier this year with a Snapdragon 835 chipset, which meant it was technically less powerful than other, Snapdragon 845-toting flagship phones. The phone also lacked any sort of physical input for gaming, unlike the Asus ROG Phone and its shoulder triggers.

How will it stand out from the pack?

A more powerful chipset with integrated physical input seems like a good starting point for an upgraded model, making it more of a match for the Asus device. The original phone launched on IndieGoGo for ~$400 (the European price is 449 euros, according to Quandt), so hopefully the upgraded Red Magic doesn’t see a massive price hike.

Editor's Pick

But will this new model convince people to spend cash on gaming smartphones? We’ve seen the 120Hz Razer Phone and the ROG Phone with its array of features, but quite a few gaming phones offer flagship power and little else.

It doesn’t help that gaming smartphones generally don’t have exclusive titles, and that many mid-range phones can play high-end games anyway. Is it wishful thinking for Nvidia or Sony to get back into the gaming phone arena with exclusive wares?
