Android 9 Pie hitting Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact now
- The stable rollout of Android 9 Pie for Sony Xperia devices is happening now.
- The two confirmed devices to get the update are the Sony Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact.
- These two Sony devices join the Pixel line, the OnePlus 6, the Nokia 7 Plus, and the Essential Phone with stable Pie updates.
The Sony Xperia XZ2 was one of a handful of devices in the Android P beta program, which allowed testers to install early versions of Android 9 Pie on non-Google devices for the first time.
Since the XZ2 had such early access to Pie, it makes sense it would be one of the earliest recipients of a stable Pie rollout, and wouldn’t you know it: that’s happening right now.
As confirmed via Xperia Blog, a stable rollout of Android 9 Pie is happening now for the Sony Xperia XZ2 and Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact. No word yet on the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium, but considering that it’s on this list, it should be coming soon.
Sony has moved the build number from 51.1.A.11.51 to version 52.0.A.3.27 with this update, and the download weighs just over 1GB. The update also includes the latest October 2018 security patch, which is certainly a nice touch.
Even with these two Sony devices getting a stable Pie version, there are still only a handful of non-Pixel devices with the latest version of Android — the others being the OnePlus 6, the Essential Phone, and the Nokia 7 Plus.
Many device manufacturers are committing to releasing Android 9 Pie updates for some of their devices by the end of the year, so you should see a lot more smartphones with Pie in the near future.
