Google News will get a dark mode, already appearing on some devices
- Users are reporting a Google News dark mode appeared on their devices.
- From screenshots shared online, it appears you can force a permanent Google News dark mode.
- It’s likely the new feature will roll out with Google News version 5.5.
For as much as Google fights putting a system-wide dark mode into Android, it certainly doesn’t seem to mind putting dark modes into many of its Google apps. We’ve seen dark modes already in Android Messages, YouTube, and now we’ve got one for Google News.
Eagle-eyed Redditors report finding the new Google News dark mode feature on their devices today, and we’ve also seen some screenshots on Twitter. You can scroll down a bit to see what the Google News dark mode will look like.
For what it’s worth, we here at Android Authority tried to get dark mode on our various devices, but we couldn’t see it (even on our Google Pixel 2 XL with the latest version of Android 9 Pie). It seems that we’re going to have to wait our turn in what appears to be a typical Google slow rollout.
Luckily, we can see how it will work in these shots:
As you can see from the screenshots, you have a good degree of control over how the Google News dark mode works. You can set it to be always on, turn on automatically at night or when battery saver is on, only turn on when battery saver is on, or never turn on at all. Nice!
It’s highly likely that this new feature will hit with Google News version 5.5, so be on the lookout for an update on your Android device.
Does Google pushing out all these dark themes point to the company finally getting the hint that Android users want a system-wide dark mode? Do you think that will ever happen? Or are we only going to have themes in specific apps and that’s it? Let us know your theories in the comments!
