Next HMD flagship reportedly called Nokia 9 Pureview, but what does it mean?

  • HMD’s upcoming flagship phone will reportedly be called the Nokia 9 Pureview.
  • HMD recently acquired the Pureview trademark from Nokia and Microsoft.
  • Previous Pureview-branded phones include the Nokia 808, Lumia 1020, and Lumia 950.

We’re definitely overdue for a new HMD flagship, as the Nokia 8 is just over a year old at this point. We’ve previously heard about a new Nokia-branded flagship, however, and it looks like we now have a name.

The new flagship will be called the Nokia 9 Pureview, according to WinFuture journalist Roland Quandt. The news comes roughly six weeks after it emerged that HMD Global acquired the Pureview trademark from Nokia and Microsoft.

It wouldn’t be the first time a Nokia-branded phone had the Pureview name, either. The Nokia 808 Pureview started the trend back in 2012, owing to its cutting-edge camera technology at the time. The device packed a 41MP camera, which enabled oversampled shots and zoom. The branding was also used for 2013’s Lumia 1020, which offered a 41MP camera too (albeit with OIS).

What makes a Pureview camera?

None of this is to say the Nokia 9 will have a 41MP camera, as Nokia and Microsoft have used the branding for other camera-focused phones too. Devices such as the Lumia 830, Lumia 920, and Lumia 1520 didn’t have 41MP sensors but they had Pureview cameras anyway, according to the two companies.

In other words, the Pureview name doesn’t necessarily point to a type of camera technology, but historically means we can expect great camera quality and/or some sort of innovation.

Editor's Pick

The Nokia 9’s innovation might be a penta-lens camera setup, according to a supposedly leaked photo of an unnamed Nokia device earlier this year. In theory, this sort of camera arrangement could allow for more flexible shooting (featuring normal, wide-angle, telephoto, monochrome and other cameras), or better low-light performance and dynamic range.

Whether it indeed packs five cameras or a more conventional setup, we’re just hoping the Nokia 9 Pureview lives up to other Pureview-branded phones. What do you want to see in HMD’s next flagship phone?
