Bad news if you love Samsung iris scanners: the Galaxy S10 might lose it

  • Reliable leaker Ice Universe tweeted some rumors about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10.
  • According to the leaker, the Galaxy S10 will not have an iris scanner, instead focusing only on the ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor.
  • Ice Universe also claims the fingerprint sensor area might cover about 30 percent of the phone’s display.

The Samsung Galaxy S10 isn’t due to launch until 2019, but we’re already seeing quite a few leaks and rumors about the upcoming smartphone line.

Earlier today, noted and reliable leaker Ice Universe (@UniverseIce) posted some tweets about the Galaxy S10 which might hold some disappointing news for some users. According to the tweets, the Galaxy S10 might completely drop the iris scanner Samsung introduced with the Samsung Galaxy S8. Instead, the S10 will rely much more on the expected ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor.

Check out the tweet below:

This wouldn’t be the first time Samsung has dropped a feature introduced only a few generations earlier, but it’s still likely disappointing news for those of you out there who rely on the iris scanning technology on your current Samsung device.

However, Ice Universe does make it seem like Samsung is going all-in on its expected ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor. If the company drops iris scanning, the fingerprint sensor will then be the easiest and best option for biometric security (as face unlock is not as secure as a fingerprint scan).

Ice Universe did say one other thing about the Galaxy S10: the in-display sensor might cover a whopping 30 percent of the device’s display:

We already know that the ultrasonic sensor will be better than the optical sensors found in many current smartphones, such as the just-released OnePlus 6T. But if the fingerprint sensor will read 30 percent of the display, that will help make a strong case for ease-of-use when it comes to the new technology.
