5 phones with a whopping 10 GB of RAM

OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition

Remember when phone companies had lots of bragging rights when one of their handsets had 8GB of RAM inside? Yep, that is so 2017. Now there is a rush by many phone makers to cram 10GB of RAM inside their flagship models.

Whether or not consumers actually need 10GB of RAM in their smartphones is something that can be debated. For the moment, we are only concerned with showing you all the officially announced phones that have 10GB of Random Access Memory. We will be updating this post as more phones with that new high memory ceiling arrive.

OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition

OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition

The OnePlus 6T was already a great phone, with flagship-level hardware and software for a price that’s much less compared to its direct competition. Now the company has gone ahead and launched a new version of that phone that packs in 10GB of RAM, 2GB higher than what you can get from the regular version. However, the  OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition, sold in collaboration with the well-known UK-based supercar maker and F1 constructor, is still priced for far less than most phones with the same specs.

The phone has some visual differences as well. It’s made of a black carbon fiber design with McLaren’s logo and its trademark “Papaya Orange” color around the rim, and even using the phone’s in-screen fingerprint reader shows some orange animation.

Aside from its 10GB of RAM, the biggest hardware difference on the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition, compared to the standard version, is that it comes with a 30W “warp charge 30” charger, which is supposed to give the phone a day’s worth of battery charge in just 20 minutes. Yet, with all of that extra RAM and a faster charger, the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition is priced at just $699, which is quite reasonable.

The other specs on the McLaren Edition are the same as on the regular OnePlus 6T; with its 6.41-inch Super AMOLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, 256GB of onboard storage, a 3,700mAh battery, an in-display fingerprint sensor, 16MP and 20MP rear cameras, and a 16MP front-facing camera.

By the way, make sure to check out our speed test of the OnePlus 6, the standard OnePlus 6T and the McLaren Edition, to see if adding that extra 2GB of RAM makes any difference in performance.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 - home screen

The Mi Mix lineup of smartphone from Xiaomi has always presented cutting-edge hardware and features, and the Mi Mix 3 is no exception. While regular models of the phone will come in 6GB and 8GB versions, there is a Forbidden City Special Edition version with 10GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It will sell in its home country of China for 4,999 yuan (~$720).

The Mi Mix 3 has a  6.39-inch AMOLED display with a 2,340 x 1,080 resolution and a 19.5:9 screen ratio. It also has a 93.4 percent screen-to-body ratio, thanks to the fact that its cameras slide out of the top of the phone when in use. The rear camera set-up has dual 12MP sensors, with the primary shooter using a f/1.8 aperture with 1.4 micron pixels. The second sensor is a telephoto camera with a smaller f/2.4 aperture and 1.0 micron pixels. The front-facing cameras include a main 24MP sensor and a secondary 2MP camera for cool portrait effects.

The phone also has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and a 3,200mAh battery, with support for wireless charging, along with Android 9 Pie and Xiaomi’s MIUI 10 skin on top. The phone is supposed to be sold in the UK at some point, but it’s unlikely to be released in the US, and the 10GB version may only be sold in China in any case.

Xiaomi Black Shark Helo

Yes, it’s yet another Xiaomi phone on this list. The Xiaomi Black Shark Helo is the second release in the new gaming-themed Black Shark smartphone line. In addition to the standard models with 6GB  and 8GB of RAM, Xiaomi will release a version of the Black Shark Helo with 10GB of RAM, along with 256GB of storage. However, there’s no word on a price or a release date for that version.

The other hardware specs for the Black Shark Helo include a 6-inch 2,160 x 1,080 display,  the Snapdragon 845 chipset, two rear cameras with 12MP and 20MP sensors, a 20MP front-facing camera, and a big 4,000mAh battery. However, this is supposed to be a gaming-themed phone, and the Black Shark Helo has features like Gamer Studio, which lets you customized the settings for things like processor speed, touch sensitivity, display refresh, network speed and more for specific games. The 10GB version of the phone will also ship with two game controllers,  one for each side of the phone in landscape mode, so you can have more of a true console gaming experience.

  • Snapdragon 845 chipset
  • 10GB of RAM
  • 256GB of on-board storage, non-expandable

Nubia Red Magic Mars

Like the Xiaomi Black Shark Helo, the Nubia Red Magic Mars is the second in the Red Magic gaming-oriented smartphone series to be released by ZTE’s Nubia brand. If you live in China, you can get a version with 10GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage for 3,999 yuan (~$575). There’s no word on when this phone will be released elsewhere.

The phone has a large 6-inch display but uses an old-fashioned IPS LCD touchscreen. It does come with the Snapdragon 845 processor and Android 9 Pie, but there’s just one rear 16MP camera, along with an 8MP front camera and a 3,800mAh battery. The Red Magic Mars adds in capacitive keys that serve as shoulder triggers for games, and Nubia will sell an optional game controller that connects to the side of the phone. All in all, the Nubia Red Magic Red is an example of a phone that puts in high-end features like 10GB of RAM, but cuts corners in others (the LCD screen and the single rear camera).

Specs

  • 6.01-inch AMOLED display with 1,080 x 2,160 resolution
  • Snapdragon 845 chipset
  • 10GB of RAM
  • 256GB of on-board storage, non-expandable
  • 16MP rear camera, 8MP front-facing camera
  • Non-removable 3,800mAh battery
  • Android 9 Pie

Vivo Nex Dual Display Edition

Our final 10GB phone is the Vivo Nex Dual Display Edition. In addition to its 10GB of RAM, it has the Snapdragon 845 processor, 128GB of onboard storage, a 3,500mAh battery, and an in-display fingerprint scanner. However, the biggest feature on this handset, as you might have guessed from its name, is that it not only has a front 6.39-inch OLED 2,340 x 1,080 resolution scren, but also a 5.49-inch OLED 1,920 x 1,080 resolution display on the back.

Because there is such a display on the back, there’s no need for a front-facing camera on this phone. Instead, Vivo Next Dual Display Edition takes both regular and selfie images with its three rear camera sensors. There’s a 12MP f/1.79 main sensor, a 2MP secondary sensor that’s used to create depth effects, and a third time-of-flight (TOF) sensor that’s used to create 3D effects and used for augmented reality features.

Pre-orders for the Vivo Next Dual Display Edition have started in China, for the price of 4,998 yuan ($725). The phone itself officially goes on sale December 29. There’s no word on when it might launch elsewhere.

Specs

  • 6.30-inch OLED front display with 2,340 x 1,080 resolution
