If your phone has an OLED display, it was likely made by Samsung
When it comes to smartphone displays, Samsung’s handsets have almost always been the best looking on the market. Part of this has been the company’s push to use OLEDs. Other companies like Apple haven’t looked over this fact, many of which now pay Samsung to produce OLED displays for their devices.
But according to a report from the IHS Markit market research firm (via SamMobile), Samsung’s dominance in the OLED field isn’t just anecdotal. Between July and September 2018, Samsung held a 93.3 percent market share on OLED smartphone displays.
These numbers appear astonishing especially after the research firm noted that over 61 percent of the smartphones sold in the last quarter ship with OLED displays.
All of the firm’s figures are based on the revenue earned by the various companies making various smartphone displays. In Q3 2018, OLEDs accounted for $6.6 billion of the total $10.7 billion in revenue made on smartphone display sales.
And it’s not just OLEDs that Samsung is a dominant player in. According to the research firm, the South Korean company also produces roughly 57.8 percent of the market’s LCD displays.
Put together, Samsung produces roughly 57.8 percent of the world’s smartphone displays. The two companies that make the second and third largest number of smartphone displays are BOE and Tianma, and they only hold a 7.9 percent and 7.7 percent market share respectively.
As Samsung moves forward with it foldable OLED display technology and 4K laptop panels, the company’s market dominance will likely continue to grow.
