LG G8 ThinQ render accuracy is affirmed by tech journalist, plot thickens
- Yesterday, renders allegedly depicting the LG G8 ThinQ leaked from a reliable source.
- Shortly after, an LG executive refuted the leaks as being inaccurate.
- Now, a prominent tech journalist claims he’s seen the G8 for real, and the renders are dead on.
Who knew that a seemingly run-of-the-mill set of smartphone renders would stoke up so much drama?
Yesterday, reliable smartphone leaker @OnLeaks (via 91Mobiles) posted a set of renders allegedly depicting the LG G8 ThinQ. The internet, upon viewing the renders, appeared to give a collective sigh as the images look so much like the LG G7 ThinQ that it’s hard to even tell them apart.

Later on that day, LG executive Ken Hong took to Twitter and, with a series of seemingly annoyed tweets, called out the renders as being inaccurate. Hong didn’t clarify what specifically about the renders was inaccurate, but did say this in response to @OnLeaks:
The claim you make in your “leak” is wrong. It’s as simple as that. https://t.co/dtIMRe565z

This response from Hong made some folks wonder: could the renders be of another device? As most of us know, the renders leaked by @OnLeaks are almost always dead on as they are sourced from CAD files distributed to other companies so they can create things like protective cases. Therefore it is highly unlikely the LG device depicted is not a real phone getting released soon, but it certainly could be a phone that isn’t the LG G8 ThinQ.
The debate hung there for a bit until today, when David Ruddock, the managing editor of Android Police, had this to say:
I’ve seen the G8. The @OnLeaks leak is legit. Maybe there are some very, very minor changes to the phone that aren’t accurately represented in the CAD renders (perhaps color, textures), buuuuuuuuut that’s definitely a G8.

Ruddock then went on to tweet that he could possibly lose favor with LG for saying these things, but he didn’t seem to care much. He also added that LG could have a surprise in store for us about what the phone can do or some other hidden feature — but stood by his claim that the phone depicted in the @OnLeaks renders is the LG G8 ThinQ.
Android Authority learned at CES 2019 that LG wants to launch the LG G8 ThinQ at Mobile World Congress 2019, which starts at the end of February. Therefore, it’s likely we’ll know exactly what’s going on then.
