The Motorola Razr is allegedly back, this time as a $1,500 foldable smartphone
Looking back at the history of cell phones, one of the most iconic handsets was the Motorola Razr. In a world of plastic clamshell and candy bar-style phones, the Razr introduced style, slim designed, and revolutionized the mobile world. According to the Wall Street Journal (via The Verge), the Chinese-owned company might try it again by releasing a new Motorola Razr with a foldable screen.
The comeback of the Motorola Razr looks to be of limited quantity. According to the WSJ, the handset will be exclusive to Verizon in the U.S. and will cost $1,500. Additionally, the company is only set to manufacture 200,000 units.
It’s unknown if the limited availability will be due to Motorola testing the popularity of the foldable screen form factor or something else.
Unfortunately, despite allegedly having insider information about Motorola’s plans, the WSJ was unable to provide any details about the upcoming phone’s design or specifications.
This isn’t the first time that it has been believed that Motorola would launch a new Razr. For several years now, company representatives have repeatedly teased us with a comeback of the brand. Excluding the devices launched in 2011 and 2012 that used the name, there has not been any real rerelease of the iconic handset.
We’ve also heard rumors about Motorola creating a foldable smartphone before. Halfway through 2018, Motorola patented a clamshell-style handset similar in style to the original Razr. If the company moved forward with this design, it would differ from Samsung and the Royole FlexPai which both utilize a horizontal fold.
