Oppo’s 10x “lossless” zoom tech looks hot in new video, coming to MWC 2019?

Oppo has teased its upcoming “10x lossless zoom” camera technology in a new video. The company tweeted the short clip from its global account yesterday showing the camera in action.

At MWC 2017, Oppo showed-off how it handles 5x lossless zoom on smartphones, using a prism-based technique depicted in the image above. The tech improves upon current digital zoom methods (which present a noticeable drop in quality) to present something that seems closer in quality to optical zooming.

Take a look at how the latest evolution of this is shaping up in the clip below:

The tech certainly looks impressive; there are some slight changes in the color temperature as the camera zooms closer into the cathedral, but there’s no degradation like you see in a typical digital zoom. Presumably, this is part of an upcoming smartphone, though Oppo didn’t offer any details on this.

Oppo has an event planned in Barcelona just ahead of MWC 2019 on February 23 where we’ll hopefully learn more.

This technology represents an exciting advance for smartphones, and the good news is it may not be limited to Oppo phones in the future. Samsung acquired Israeli photography firm Corephotonics a few weeks ago, and the company was previously working on zoom solutions as part of a partnership with Oppo. There’s a chance we’ll see similar zoom capabilities on future Galaxy phones.
